What it is
Azelastine nasal spray is a prescription nasal antihistamine (H₁-receptor antagonist) used for relief of nasal allergy symptoms.
It is marketed under brand names such as Astelin, Astepro in the U.S. (different strengths) and generics in many countries.
How it works
Azelastine works by blocking the action of histamine (a chemical released during allergic reactions) at the H₁ receptor. This helps reduce sneezing, itching, runny nose and other allergy symptoms.
It also may inhibit release of other mediators (leukotrienes, cytokines) involved in inflammation when given nasally.
